English: Focus on Writing 2 (Engineering)


Description

This course is intended for non-native speakers who wish to improve their skills in writing dissertations, research papers and reports.

There will be a ‘hands-on’ approach wherever possible as you will have an opportunity to edit texts from different types of relevant scientific writing (e.g. journals, reports, research proposals, posters) as well as to work on your own texts.

The sessions comprise of:

Topics covered

Sessions 1-3, 5-7

  • Discourse structure and formats for the presentation and structuring of material in the various sub-sections of a research paper
  • Language work to support your academic writing e.g. use of tenses, pronouns for reference, linking words and phases and synonyms
  • Editing and summarising texts including the avoidance of redundant vocabulary and phrases
  • Appropriate punctuation
  • Appropriacy of style and register (levels of formality)
  • Referencing, graphs and figures

Notes

For sesssions 1-3, 5-7 the first part of the session will focus on the topics above, the rest of the session will be time for allocated individual slots to be arranged with students. It is expected that any work that you would like to have feedback on is sent to the tutor in advance.
